All Prussia was split into so called cantons (i.e. a kind of province in charge of recruitment of candidates to the army and allocating and providing them to specific regiments). Every male new-born subject of the King was entered to a special list by the parson of the parish. On reaching the drafting age which was 20-40 years, the authority had a complete list of the cantonists living in a specific area. Most of the conscripts were not people of noble birth. There were a number of exemptions from military service duty e.g.: when the cantonist was being educated. The provinces of some  cities important for the economy were totally exempted from this duty. Due to these exemptions, the poorer citizens had to take the burden of military service.
